Gordon Donegan

It is with much regret that I have to report the passing of Gordon Donegan on 20th.December. His doctors had been stuggling to identify the cause of various symptoms for some time. Having had the problem diagnosed as an abcess near the spine and being admitted to hospital for treatment he caught a "hospital induced illness", which caused a rapid deterioration in his health. By the time a hospital had been found with capacity in intensive care he was beyond help. One saving grace was that his wife, Monica, and his family were with him at the end.

Those of you who encountered Gordon at the table tennis table will well remember his skill with long pimples. I played an Interleague match with him on one occasion. At 2:18 in the first game he made a come back and beat his opponent 21:19! The opponent was devastated and lost 21:5 in the second. On another occasion, having been told by the defeated Hadleigh Forum players that it was impossible to play against his rubbers, he spent half an hour coaching them to cope with the rubbers. Unfortunately Gordon had to retire from table tennis due to blood pressure problems.

After retiring he still supported the League Quiz Nights, with Monica, and supplied humour and extensive knowledge. He was a major contributor to the winning score for the St.Peter's team at the last quiz.

His funeral is at Brentwood Cathedral at 12:30 Monday 6th.January. Monica has requested that there be no flowers, but if anyone wishes to make a tribute, donations to the Little Haven Hospice would be welcome.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with Monica and the family at this sad time.
