Southend A versus Beckontree
Sunday 20th January 2008 played at Hullbridge
Nigel Lamb and Glenn Johnson got the home team off to a
good start with a 3 straight win over A Candy and P Cranmer. In the first singles Andrew Halling took the opener against top-ranked Becontree player B Mailey, followed by 3 deuce games, 2 of which went Andrew's way after he was behind in each game.
Glen then beat A Candy in 3 before Nigel had a struggle against P Craney, losing 3 straight. Andrew and Glenn then played in the best match of the afternoon, a cracking doubles against Mailey and Cranmer winning 12-14, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9.
Andrew then beat Candy in 3, Nigel lost very closely to Mailey 13-11, 12-14, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11, and Glenn came from behind to beat Cranmer 3-1. Nigel and Andrew finished the afternoon with a 3-1 win against Mailey and Candy.
Andrew realised why the scorers had been calling him Andre' all match, Nigel had missed a letter on the scorecard! Glen rushed off for a curry and the rest all tucked into the sandwiches with Nigel eating all the swiss-roll.
An enjoyable and very sporting match with a 7-2 scoreline to Southend A.
