Thorpe Bay Return to the Southend League

This Season, Thorpe Bay TTC returned to their roots in Thorpe Bay. They last played there in 2006, when they finished 2nd in the Premier Division and all their players were high in the averages. They then moved to Jamie Willson’s great new venue in Leigh and changed their name to Legra: continuing their success, as one of Essex’s Leading Clubs. This year, Jamie, Julia and their family, moved to Eastwood and inconsequence Legra lost their venue. The Southend League has much to thank Jamie for in building the excellent Table Tennis room and for all the support he, personally, has given to the Southend League and Table Tennis in general, thanks Jamie.

The Southend & District Table Tennis League wish Jamie, Julia and their family, every happiness in their new home.

At the Southend Committee’s “tongue in cheek request”, Ken Field cleared his former Table Tennis room, which had been used as a storage facility for the past 5 years, and with the help of step son Dave Nunn, the original facilities were restored, thanks Dave. Thorpe Bay field 2 teams in the Southend Premier and 1 in the Basildon Premier.

The first match played there for 5 years, was between Thorpe Bay A and newly promoted Runnymede B. Thorpe Bay fielded a very strong team of Alex Abbot (2010-11 Southend Men’s and Vet’s Singles Champion), Paul Whatton (2009/10 Southend Premier Restricted Champion) and John Poysden (2008-09 Southend Premier Restricted Champion); a formidable team for Runnymede to face. Nevertheless their team of Tony Millward, Tony Coeshall and the very promising junior, James Marshall (2010-11 Southend Handicap Single’s Champion and joint recipient of the 2011 “Stuart Gibbs Award” for the “Most Promising Newcomer”) acquitted themselves well and although the final result was an inevitable 9-0 success for Thorpe Bay; John Poysden the Thorpe Bay Captain, added his praises for Runnymede and the promise of James Marshall.
